April 26, 2009

Because there are three bands rotating Sundays at the Raleigh campus, on the fourth and fifth Sundays we do something different. Some months one band may play twice in one month in order to introduce new music, or we may put together a band strategically in order to try something unique with the music. On the fourth Sunday of April, band leader @JoshBain put together a group.

Marvelous Light
Words and Music by Charlie Hall
It’s been a while since this song was in the @V21Church rotation, but went over well yesterday. Hall’s lyrics and arrangement create a natural joy and energy that make this song an ideal opener to the day.

Sermon: Philippians 4:1-9
Throughout history, the Church has been burdened by disagreements among fellow Christians. In Philippians 4, the Apostle Paul is dealing with a disagreement between two women that have labored with him in the gospel. Paul encourages the Philippian church to maintain unity in the gospel, not allowing non-essential things to cause disunity among the church. This week @PastorTyler encourages @V21Church to be like-minded in the unity of the gospel to show the world reality of the risen Savior. Visit this link to listen to the podcast.

When Tears Fall
Words and Music by Tim Hughes
This song has become a fast favorite here at @V21Church, and both Josh and Mike lead it well. I like the way it builds continually throughout the whole song, and I was impressed with Daniel (drums) and Jerry’s (bass) execution.

Come Ye Sinners
Words by Joseph Hart
This was a staple song at Vintage21 for several years, but we gave it a rest. Yesterday people seemed happy to sing it once more, and Josh did a great job with a simple arrangement. Too often I sang many verses, and it seemed to belabor the point. Josh kept it simple, and it seemed more effective as a worship song as a result.

Jesus Paid It All
Words by Elvina Hall, 1865
Arrangement by Kristian Stanfill

It was beautiful how the songs supported the sermon and scripture today. This song was fantastic to end on, and again Jerry and Daniel did an amazing job building at the end. The services sang out, especially the 6:00. Man, they were on it! I’m going to write a whole post about how great they are. Look for that on Thursday.

Have a great week! My wife’s baby has not come yet, but I’m hoping that any moment now I’ll get the call.
