Me, I Lift My Name On High

This Sunday, while praying to close the 11:30 service, this thought popped into my head:

“We would consider it utterly ridiculous to gather and sing praises to ourselves, another person, or an inanimate object. If that worship is ridiculous, why then would we live our lives in worship of those things?”

The image is comical- think of people with raised hands and closed eyes, singing to themselves about how great they are. This is something to consider. If you believe in God and respond to him by singing praises on Sundays, how do you then live your life with yourself at the center? You’re essentially spending the remaining hours and days of your week singing praise to yourself. Why sing to God at all? Is it really worship if it’s an hour and a few songs, while the remainder of your life is all about yourself? Scripture doesn’t leave that as an option. Congregational gatherings of worship and where our hearts lie throughout our lives is tied together throughout the Bible.

singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
- Colossians 4:16b-17
