One of the most frustrating things we’ve heard at Vintage21 comes from followers of Christ who say “I wish we could dig into something deeper”. The implication here is that the Gospel is something they’ve “gotten”, and they’re ready to move on to deeper truths of God. Now, I don’t claim to be wise, but when I look at the people who are wise, there seems to be a pattern. The wiser, more experienced and deeper a person is, the more enamored they are with Jesus Christ. They look less elsewhere, and are floored by the implications of God sending His Son to be our Savior. With all the wisdom and knowledge he possessed, Paul wrote that he resolved only to know “Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:1-2).
My hope is that every week people would be confronted with, changed by and praising Jesus Christ. On the outset, singing Jesus songs week after week may appear to be repetitive- why not sing about other things? But think of the characteristics of God! Untiring Creator, All-Knowing, Omnipresent, Eternal, Love, Truth, and on and on and on we could go. Never could we sing the end of Jesus, nor should we even aspire to. He is our Savior, and it is through Him that we even worship God the Father.
This week, we’ll focus on the lordship of Christ. Last week was a beautiful week of Christ as Savior, and I believe God’s Spirit used those songs to draw people to himself, that people were actually saved. My hope is that this week people who believe Jesus died for them would humbly get on their knees and begin living life with Jesus as Lord. If you’re coming (and you should), I ask you to consider whether or not this is true in your life ahead of time. Will it be a Sunday of celebration or confession for you?
