“He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.” – Psalm 40:3
David was moved to respond to God in such a way that those who saw his praises were moved to show respect for and put their faith in the Lord. I’m envisioning that my band would be composed of a group of people who desire to write and perform music which focuses on responding to God (most especially for His grace in providing us salvation through Christ) in such a way that draws other people closer to Him and allows them to see His glory. Our response can come in many different ways: joyful praise, reflective meditation, even doubt or questioning at times that can lead us into stronger affirmations of our faith (Psalm 22). We have been graced with musical talent and creativity, and therefore we should embrace those gifts and use them to respond to the Lord and lead others into doing so.
As far as the sound and musical aspects of the band: Since we respond in so many different ways, our sound will be diverse: really toned down and mellow as we reflect (e.g. Amos Lee “Long Line of Pain”), or upbeat and bright as we respond joyfully (e.g. David Crowder “Wholly Yours”). It is a little hard to put an exact finger on a specific genre, and our sound will become its own as our band grows together. I think it’s best categorized as “acoustic/folk rock” (so very acoustically driven) but it will draw from different influences such as jazz, blues, Latin sounds, etc. I think it’s best exemplified by Nate Allman‘s “Beautiful Mystery” and “Loose Pockets” (although these don’t have the completely same instrumental arrangements as we will have, you may be able to see how you would work other instruments into this style. I want each individual in the band to really add their own element as far as creativity in fitting into the sound). Other artists that I think our sound might be similar to at times include Brian Webb, Amos Lee, and Braddigan (a former member of the band Dispatch). Some of the songs already played at Vintage21 that would fit in might be “Wood & String”, “Closer,” “Wholly Yours,” etc.
Drums – Sometimes steady on-beats and consistent, other times “spaced out” and syncopated rhythms, somewhat jazzy style colorations
Bass – Bass will be very key for some songs and have lots of embellishment (like in Wood & String for example)
Electric – Not going for a heavier rock-type lead. A cleaner style.
Keys – Will at times jump out with short colorations/improvisations, or other times just add to the melody.
Backing vocals – 1 female that is into both upbeat and mellow singing, and I’d even like to do some female-led songs.
Rhythm – This is pretty much always going to be acoustic, but diverse: from percussive Dave-Matthews like styles to finger picking
